Becoming an Architect
RIBA Client Design Advisors guide clients through the process of commissioning buildings from the earliest stages in order to deliver the best long-term solution. They are usually architects, but not the ones designing clients' buildings. They sit on the client's side of a project, independent of the supply
team, providing expert support where it is needed.
Architects and other construction professionals, with the relevant skills and experience, are invited to apply for a place on the register. Applicants must provide examples of their experience in managing building works and dealing with clients; also, they must compile a personal statement and describe how they meet the demands of 12 core skills required for the role.
RIBA Business Masterclasses
Feedback from architects and clients alike shows that improvements in business focus, skills and quality of service to clients are vital, and through such improvements we can improve practice profitability and the status of architects.
With this aim, in May 2006 RIBA Practice introduced the RIBA Business Masterclasses, designed specifically for senior architects who are existing or potential principal of their
practice and seeking to improve their business effectiveness. The classes offer tailored strategic management training that focuses directly on the business issues faced by architectural practices from strategic planning to financial management, to inter-personal relationships.
They are presented by expert consultants with vast experience of working closely with architects and practices. The master-class format of small groups enables you to work on your own business issues with personal advice from the experts.
The masterclasses cover the following topics:
- Building your Business: James Cooke and Stephen Soden, James Cooke Consultants
- Getting Work: Caroline Cole and Chris Andrews, Colander
- Managing Risk: Roger Flaxman, Flaxman Partners
- Valuing your People: Caroline Cole and Chris Andrews, Colander
- Keeping out of Trouble: Owen Luder, Owen Luder Consultancy
RIBA/BCIS Cost Calculator
The RIBA, in collaboration with BCIS, is pleased to announce the development of the RIBA/BCIS Cost Calculator. This product, exclusive to RIBA members, will provide a range of costs from the BCIS building project database. These costs reflect the tender costs of actual building projects in the UK and will allow architects to provide more accurate guidance to clients on what typical projects cost to build. Please contact BCIS for further details, to request a 2-week free trial of the service, or to subscribe, tel: +44 (0) 207 695 1500, email: sales@bcis.co.uk
